Jul 28, 2025Your ChatGPT Conversations Aren’t Safe

It’s hard to deny the convenience and capabilities of tools like ChatGPT. But even the architects of these powerful systems are sounding the alarm about potential pitfalls. What could possibly go wrong, you ask?

Imagine pouring your heart out to an AI, seeking guidance on a deeply personal matter, only for that information to surface in a courtroom.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has issued a warning regarding the privacy of conversations held with ChatGPT. Speaking at Theo Von’s podcast, This Past Weekend, Altman voiced his concerns over the lack of legal protection for your chats with the AI.

“People talk about the most personal details in their lives to ChatGPT. People use it, young people, especially, use it as a therapist, a life coach,” he said. But unlike confidential discussions with a therapist or lawyer, your interactions with ChatGPT are not privileged. This means that in a legal proceeding, those very personal conversations could be admissible as evidence.

Altman himself described this potential scenario as “very screwed up,” highlighting the ease with which private information could be compelled for disclosure.

The absence of safeguards akin to a therapist-patient relationship creates a perilous gap where digital trust can be severely breached. OpenAI, under legal obligation, could be forced to hand over your data, transforming your private queries into public records.

Beyond the courtroom, Altman also cautioned against a growing over-reliance on ChatGPT, particularly among younger generations. According to him, many young people feel incapable of making decisions without consulting the AI, labeling this trend as “bad and dangerous.” This dependency raises questions about the erosion of critical thinking, personal autonomy, and the development of independent decision-making skills.
